Hypnosis is a trance state characterized by an extreme suggestibility, a feeling of relaxation and a heightened imagination. You’re able to relax and shut out the everyday world.
Although the word hypnosis comes from the Greek word hypnos, meaning « sleep », it’s not comparable to sleep, because you stay alert the whole time. It is more like daydreaming or when you « lose yourself » in a book or a movie. You remain conscious but you eliminate most of the stimuli that are around you, focusing on the subject at hand, wiping out almost any other thought. We can say that hypnosis is a natural state that everybody experiences each day several times.
So how can Hypnotherapy help you?
During a session you feel uninhibited and relaxed. Presumably, this is because you tune out the doubts and worries that usually keep your actions in check. In this state, you are also highly suggestible. That is to say, when the hypnotherapist tells you something, you’ll probably embrace the idea completely if you fell it can be good for you. Sometimes the solution will come out of your own imagination, using your own resources to overcome the issue.
Accessing your unconscious mind makes you react in a more intuitive way, more open to your emotions and body reactions, letting the mind not overanalyzing the issue. It gives you the opportunity to face the issue with another angle, thus creating new brain connections to cope with it. The important thing to clear is that a hypnotherapist can’t get you to do anything you don’t want to do. I practice ericksonian hypnosis, which fully respects the autonomy and values of the person.
